Crimson Tide to debut without Cauley
Thursday, September 10, 2009
ARDMORE, Pa. – Bud Cauley’s sophomore year at Alabama hasn’t even begun, and he already knows it’s going to start and finish with a bang.
Cauley will not be wearing his classic seersuckers for the Crimson Tide at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm in Rocky Face, Ga., this weekend. Instead, he will be playing for a different team: Team USA at the 42nd Walker Cup at Merion Golf Club.
Cauley will not only miss the first tournament of the year but also will miss the last regular-season event on the Crimson Tide’s schedule, the SEC Championship. Earlier this summer, Cauley won the Players Amateur and earned an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Verizon Heritage.
I caught up with Cauley’s college coach, Jay Seawell, on Thursday at Merion and teased him a bit. I asked Seawell if he was going to redshirt Bud this year, with all the time he will be “missing” from the regular-season schedule. The coach laughed and jokingly said, “Yeah, we will redshirt him this year. Then we can have three more years of eligibility left with him.”
Cauley might not be putting on the seersuckers this week, but he is playing for a pretty good team. Come Saturday, he will be suiting up in the classic look of red, white and blue.
