Procter & Gamble back as LPGA sponsor

Teresa Lu hits out of the sand at this year's P&G Beauty NW Arkansas Championship. Proctor & Gamble will return as the tournament sponsor in 2010.

A Procter & Gamble official announced that the consumer-products company will renew its LPGA tournament sponsorship for 2010, Golfweek has learned.

The confirmation came Sept. 8 at a pairings party in Fayetteville, Ark., during the P&G beauty NW Arkansas Championship. No other details, such as purse size, were given.

In other events news, Tom Maletis and the Tournament Golf Foundation are still chasing after potential sponsors for the LPGA’s popular Phoenix stop. Tournament Golf Foundation also runs the Safeway Classic in Portland.

“Obviously no one is jumping out of the woodwork,” Maletis said.

In the past, sponsoring a first-rate event such as the Phoenix LPGA International cost anywhere from $3 million to $3.5 million. Maletis said they could get things done with $2.5 million.

“Not a huge amount of bells and whistles,” Maletis said. “But still putting on a solid event.”

While time is certainly of the essence, Maletis and his team put together the 2009 Phoenix event in seven weeks.
