Purdue sweeps Lady Northern Invitational

Purdue waltzed to a 13-shot victory Monday at the Lady Northern Invitational.

Led by individual medalist Maude-Aimee Leblanc and runner-up Junthima Gulyanamitta, both juniors, the Boilermakers closed with a 1-over 289 at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis., for a 1-over 865 total.

Ohio State (304) and Michigan State (306) tied for second at 14-over 878.

Leblanc, the 2009 Big Ten champion, shot rounds of 68-72-70 to finish at 6-under 210. Gulyanamitta closed with 70 to finish at 3-under 213. Ohio State’s Allie White (215) was third.

Purdue, which finished second at the season-opening Mary Fossum Invitational Sept. 13, placed five players in the top 23. In addition to LeBlanc and Gulyanamitta, freshman Laura Gonzalez Esca tied for ninth, freshman Paula Reto tied for 14th and junior Kishi Sinha tied for 23rd.

Gonzalez Esca, from Belgium, won the 2008 British Girls Championship and 2009 German Ladies Amateur.

Purdue was ranked No. 7 in Golfweek’s preseason poll.

Ohio State, No. 16 in Golfweek’s preseason poll, opened its season with a fourth-place showing at Golfweek’s Conference Challenge. No. 20 Michigan State won the Mary Fossum Invitational.
