Cody making changes as summer approaches
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Austin Cody is making some drastic changes to his game, and hoping to have all the kinks worked out by the time he joins the Duke roster next fall.
Cody completely changed his grip a month ago because “it was awful.” He describes his old, unconventional double grip as something like that of Jim Furyk.
“I just got each hand over more on top of the club, it’s about a month into it now and it’s really coming along, I’m starting to see a lot of improvement,” Cody said. “Hopefully in about a few weeks to a month I’ll be back hopefully better than when I changed.”
The change was something Cody wanted to do before entering college so his game would be more consistent. Both his swing coach and Duke coach Jamie Green were on board with the adjustment. Cody’s dad, Quince, said his son has struggled with the new grip a little bit, but hopes he’ll be in good shape when the fall season rolls around.
In addition to the grip change, Cody is also looking into a new set of Nike irons to play with during the summer. He’s ready to trade up his current set, which he has had for almost a year and a half, and also needs to replace a Nike driver that broke on the driving range a couple weeks ago.
“I go up to The Oven in Dallas next Friday and get fitted for all new stuff, which will be pretty sweet,” Cody said.
It’s all part of the process for this future Blue Devil.
