RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Lorena Ochoa posted five birdies to shoot 2-under 70 and enter the weekend at the Kraft Nabisco Championship tied for second place. And, oh yeah, she also announced the launch of the Lorena Ochoa Golf Foundation, which will begin with an academy in Southern California and ambitiously grow to programs around the world.
“It just gives me goose bumps I’m so excited about it,” Ochoa said. “Just to imagine the kids, how many kids will be there, wanting to learn and getting the first idea of what golf is about. It gives me motivation.”
The first academy will open at Goose Creek Golf Course in Mira Loma, Calif. Ochoa hopes to reach out to Latinos, especially. Jason Taylor is president of Southern California PGA and now CEO of Ochoa’s golf foundation.
“We’re very fortunate to be there for our first facility, and once we really find out what’s working and iron out the business plan, we want to expand through the rest of Northern California and Southern California and cut across the country,” Taylor said. “We want to create new golfers.”
