AUGUSTA, Ga. – Brian Gay finally made it to the Masters, but after two rounds, Gay is off to Hilton Head, S.C., to defend his title next week.
“The par 3 was the highlight of the week,” Gay said after recording 74-77 and misisng the cut by four shots. “Well, the way I played. Having my girls caddie, that was probably the fun part.”
Gay had dreamed about playing at the National, but never took advantgage of it until he received an invitation to the Masters. That may have been a mistake as the course was a difficult examination for a rookie.
“Maybe a little harder than I thought,” the former Augusta resident said of Augusta National. “I three-putted three times yesterday and then three-putted three and four starting this morning. I only missed a couple of fairways. Hit a couple loose irons yesterday. But I hit it fine. Just threw too many shots away.”
