Rookie diary: Ready for some globe-trotting
Monday, April 12, 2010
This past week I was in Daytona Beach, Fla., playing in the Duramed Futures Tour event (Daytona Beach Invitational). After relaxing for a week at home, I went down to Florida last Monday to start getting ready.
The golf course we were playing was the Champions Course at LPGA International, which was also a course we played for LPGA Q-School. Because I already knew the course, I played a nine-hole practice round Tuesday, played the Pro-Am on Wednesday and then another nine holes on Thursday.
I shot 72-72-71 for the tournament but really didn’t play very well. Scores were very low this week so 1 under didn’t finish very well.
Blackwelder’s Rookie Diary
Ever wonder what life is like for a LPGA rookie? Well, Mallory Blackwelder is here to tell you. Blackwelder, 22, will file a weekly diary on Golfweek.com to give you an insider’s view of life on the LPGA, LET and Duramed Futures Tour. Follow her on Twitter at twitter.com/MalBlackwelder.
I am looking at it as another tournament under par and another learning experience to just try and keep grinding even when I don’t have my “A” game.
My plans coming up are a little daunting to think about. I am getting ready to head into a really busy part of my schedule where I will be going back and forth overseas. This week I will be at home in Kentucky practicing, resting and possibly getting an injection in my left foot. I have what I believe is a neuroma in my foot and have a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday. It is not a serious issue, just something that bothers me every once in awhile. A few years ago I had one in my right foot and got a cortisone injection and it hasn’t bothered me since, so hopefully this one will be the same!
After the week at home I will head to Texas for two Futures Tour events in Brownsville and San Antonio and a Monday Pro-Am in Houston. After the San Antonio event I will fly straight to Munich, Germany to catch a flight to Antalya, Turkey.
I will play my second LET event of the season in Turkey, then play another event in Munich before heading back home for a week off. It will be a lot of traveling just to go home for six or seven days but I think mentally I will need that. Traveling for eight or nine weeks in a row would just be too much for me to handle right now!
After that week off I will go back to Europe for another four-week stretch. I am playing good golf right now and I’m really looking forward to getting in a groove and seeing what I can do!
