Cink soaks up Augusta’s new range

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Players cannot wait to get to the Masters. Now we can tell you that there are some who refuse to leave – even if they’ve missed the cut.

Meet Stewart Cink, who never had anything going last week and was five strokes above the cut line. But did he bolt from Augusta, Ga., on Friday night or Saturday? Not a chance. Not when he had the chance to soak in the newest addition to Augusta National GC.

“The best I’ve ever seen,” Cink said. “It’s the product of people who really think hard about what they want to do and have the wherewithal to go about doing it.”

Cink was hardly surprised when he saw it.

“Nothing stands in their way over there . . . and I think the players, to the last guy, really appreciated that.”

As for what Cink spent most of his Saturday and Sunday working on while Rounds 3 and 4 were played it, it involves fitting one of Nike’s other balls to his style of play around the greens. Cink is now convinced that the Nike One Tour D is a bit too firm, that he needs something softer.

“That would allow me to perhaps be a little more confident around the greens and be able to hit shots, a little more cocky or aggressively.”
