Talking fashion with Webb Simpson
Wednesday, April 14, 2010
I spoke recently with PGA Tour player Webb Simpson. He has posted two top-20 finishes this season on Tour and told me about his fashion expertise.
On a scale from 1 to 10, how into golf fashion are you?
A would say a 10. I take a lot of pride in looking nice. I don’t study fashion ideas but looking nice and feeling comfortable is very important to me.
How early did you start thinking about your on-course style?
Since childhood, my father has stressed to me the importance of dressing appropriately on and off the golf course.
You’re sponsored by Ralph Lauren. Do you find that you have cranked up your style a notch now that you are in the spotlight on the PGA Tour?
A little, I suppose. Being a part of Polo has given me a lot more resources to work with.
What would we see you wearing outside of golf, such as going to the movies or out for dinner?
It varies, but I tend to always wear a button down shirt with jeans or khaki pants. Most importantly, I just want to be comfortable.
Who helps you choose your tournament outfits?
Meredith at Polo assists with outfits, but I do a lot myself and I ask my wife for her opinion.
How would you compare the Ralph Lauren brand to other golf apparel companies? And what made you go with this brand?
I have always followed Davis Love III and liked the way he looked on the course. Polo is a great brand and the clothes fit my stature really well.
What did you think of all the Olympic gear? I hope they gave you some of it!
I only saw a little, but the clothing looked really good.
Speaking of the Olympics, are you shooting for a spot on the 2016 USA Team?
Competing in the Olympics would be unbelievable, quite an honor.
How hard is it to juggle all your commitments and still keep your game so sharp?
The commitments are part of being a professional golfer. I enjoy the appearances and being an ambassador for my sponsors.
Do you tend to spice up your outfits depending on how high you are on the leaderboard? Any superstitions, such as Tiger’s Sunday red?
Not really. Typically I will arrange my outfits early in the week and a lot depends on how many weeks I have been on the road, weather conditions, etc. On Sunday, my main focus is my game. I don’t have to worry about what to wear because Polo always looks classic.
Which college colors would you consider to be the greatest?
Black and gold for Wake Forest. But I’ll admit, Carolina blue is a great color.
What Tour player – man or woman – do you think has great style?
Several players have good style. Davis Love and Adam Scott come to mind right away.
