Kelly aces No. 4 at Hilton Head – again

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Jerry Kelly’s got the fourth hole at Harbour Town Golf Links down pat.
For the second time since 2007, Kelly aced the par-3, 193-yard hole during the first round of the Verizon Heritage on Thursday.
“Same club, too,” Kelly said of his 4-iron.
Kelly became the first pro with two aces on Harbour Town since it began hosting a PGA Tour event in 1969. It’s also Kelly’s third hole-in-one during PGA Tour competition.
Three years ago, Kelly’s hole-in-one moved him into a third-round tie for the lead with Ernie Els. Kelly would eventually finish eighth behind champion Boo Weekley.
Kelly hopes for even better results after the latest ace.
“I still feel like there’s plenty of (good shots) out there for me,” he said. “I feel really good.”
Kelly would love to bounce back at Harbour Town. Following consecutive top 10 finishes in 2006 and 2007, Kelly missed the cut and withdrew the next two years.
He finished Thursday’s round at 4-under 67, three shots behind early first-round leader K.J. Choi.
Kelly’s ace jump-started his round. He followed with birdies on two of the next three holes to place himself among the leaders. Kelly chipped in on the fifth hole for a birdie, then knocked it to about 6 inches on the sixth for a par.
“I was 5 under and hadn’t made a putt yet,” Kelly said.
A bogey on the par-3 17th, however, dropped him back into a group that included Sergio Garcia and five-time Verizon Heritage champion Davis Love III.
Kelly, who finished tied for 12th at the Masters last week, was glad not to let the stress of Augusta National get in the way of the competition at Hilton Head.
“I was very loose out there,” he said.
