Sam White puts unique twist on golf fashion

Fashion and style is all about personal tastes. What might be one person’s favorite outfit could be the next persons nightmare. It’s all about feeling great in what you’re wearing and rockin’ it out as best you can.
A few weeks ago I was at the Duramed Futures Tour’s season-opening event in Winter Haven, Fla. Several of the players told me to check out Sam White. It didn’t take me long to see why. White, 28, of Potomac, Md., and a member of the Ladies European Tour, stepped up to the first tee dressed radically different than her playing partners and is setting trends left and right with her style.
I wanted to find out a little more about her style, inspiration and a few things that she wouldn’t be caught dead in.
Describe your fashion tastes and style.
I like men’s formal wear, the lines and the neatness of it. Ties, bowties, suspenders and vests as accessories have become part of our style culture for a while. I like the classiness and formalness of it. It seems to fit with my respect for golf. I love music as well, all types and genres of music and am a movie buff, everything new and the classics. I tend to get ideas from those actors and musicians.
You play college golf at Florida and Georgia State University, then turned professional in 2004. Have you always dressed like this on the golf course?
I have always expressed my personal fashion taste on the golf course.
Is your golf wardrobe any different than your everyday wardrobe?
Well, the shoes are different! Wish they made Chucks and Vans in golf shoes. I love being able to express myself on the course. The game of golf shows so much about a person. It only seems right to start out being who you are. I wouldn’t feel comfortable playing in just a polo and khakis. I would feel sloppy, not put together. I don’t always wear a hat, when I’m out. (laughs)
What is the inspiration behind your look?
Me, and how I am seeing myself.
Have you ever met your fashion-match on the course or are you a one-of-a-kind?
The closest person I have seen is Ryan Moore. He wears a tie and vest, and looks adorable. I have seen bits and pieces of things I wear – hats, glasses, belts on occasion on other players. I think everyone is one-of-a-kind.
Where do you do your golf shopping? Or are you sponsored? If so, what do you wear?
Anywhere and everywhere. I’m always on the look-out for stuff – Urban Outfitters, Express, surf shops. I have a very cool sponsor, Tattoo Golf. (Tattoogolf.com) I work my looks around the Tattoo Golf shirts, hats and belts.
Tell me about some of your signature looks and pieces.
I’m trying to bring out the suspenders this year. I tend to stick to blacks, whites and grays, with maybe an occasional accent color. I have worn all kinds of hats, including porkpies and fedoras. I will wear regular ties and bowties on occasion and always pay attention to the socks. I like high socks at the moment.
What are some golf trends that you would never be caught dead in?
I don’t dislike anything really. But there are some things I just do not see myself wearing. A skort, for instance. But maybe I just haven’t found the right skort!
