Mailbag: The yellow golf ball hits college!
Friday, April 16, 2010
Happy Friday everyone! It’s time to go to the mailbag, where this week Idaho Vandals head coach Jon Reehorn has the floor... I mean internet space.
One of coach Reehoorn’s Vandals is getting ready to use a yellow golf ball, the same one we saw make an appearance last week at Augusta National, and it seems the rest of the team won’t be far behind. Of course, I was very curious...

We’ve been playing the Srixon ball all season and when I found out they were coming out with a yellow ball this winter, I asked the guys if they would want to play it and they all jumped at it. As a coach you are always working to find your team an edge, something that separates your team from the rest of the pack and I’m pretty sure a yellow ball will do that. You have to remember, I worked with the guy who made purple pants trendy, which you still always talk about.
This week Jarred Bossio, 2009 WAC Freshman of the Year, will put the yellow Srixon Z-Star in play at the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. He’s been using the ball for a few days now. One of the things the team likes about the Srixon ball is that you don’t have to change it out after every wedge shot, it seems to last a long time. And for whatever reason, the YellowTour version of the ball seems as if it lasts even longer... it simply will not scuff.
Another advantage I noticed yesterday while walking with Jarred is that you have no question which ball is yours while walking up the fairway. You can walk directly toward the ball and begin thinking about the shot you need to hit well before the time you actually reach the ball... which should make you happy. Could a yellow ball actually speed up play for the individual using it? Not to mention when you hit it off line, it is still pretty easy to find.
Jarred will give the ball a go this week and hopefully by the time the WAC Championships roll around, May 3-5, in Las Vegas, NV, the whole team will have the ball in play.
