Denver freshman Kimberly Kim won her first college event Wednesday and led the Pioneers to their seventh consecutive Sun Belt Conference Championship title.

Denver, No. 14 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 2-under 286 in the final round at The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (Shoals) in Muscle Shoals, Ala., to finish at 1-over 865. No. 99 Middle Tennessee State was second, 34 shots behind. No. 72 Arkansas Little Rock was third at 900.

Kim, the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion as a 14-year-old – the championship’s youngest winner - posted rounds of 69-75-71 to finish at 1-under 215. Her teammates all were among the top 7: junior Ellie Givens (72) was second at 216, freshman Kelly Drack (71) was third at 217, senior Stephanie Sherlock (72) was fifth at 219 and sophomore Sarah Faller (76) was seventh at 221.

“It was a complete effort by each one of our players,” Denver coach Sammie Chergo said. “Ellie and Kelly were strong all week, and I am so excited for Kim to finally get her first collegiate win. We have a lot of momentum building around this team, and I am really looking forward to another successful postseason run.”

Denver finished fifth at the 2009 NCAA Women’s Championship, the best performance in program history.

The Pioneers now await the April 26 selection to their ninth consecutive NCAA regional appearance, to be played May 6-8.
