With bad weather looming, Murray State took to the course Friday at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and got to work, playing a long 27 holes on its way to a title defense at the rain-shortened championship.

With storms in the forecast for Saturday’s final round, tournament officials decided to add nine holes to the end of Friday’s second round, hoping players could finish the final nine holes of the 54-hole tournament Saturday morning.

Murray State, No. 146 in Golfweek’s rankings, was down two shots to No. 137 Jacksonville State and No. 119 Morehead State following an 18-over 306 in Thursday’s first round at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The Racers were six shots off the pace after Round 2 was completed, but posted a 1-under 143 in the first nine holes of the third round to Morehead State’s 6-over 150 and Jacksonville State’s 10-over 154. Play was canceled Saturday, so the Racers’ 45-hole score of 27-over 747 earned them the victory over Jacksonville State and Morehead State, which finished second and third, respectively.

Austin Peay State was fourth, and Eastern Kentucky finished fifth.

Murray State now owns eight Ohio Valley Conference titles, the most in the conference.

In the individual competition, Austin Peay’s Chelsea Harris won with an even-par 180 for 45 holes. Harris played her final nine holes in 1 under after completing Friday’s second round.

Murray State’s Megan McKinney and Eastern Kentucky’s April Emerson were second at 5-over 185. Jacksonville State's Lucia Fernandez was alone in fourth, another shot back.
