Columbia made it three in a row Sunday at the Ivy League Conference Championship, holding on to a slim overnight lead to take the title.

The Lions struggled in Round 1, posting 29-over 309 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., to start the championship in sixth place, 12 shots off the pace. Every golfer improved during the second round as Columbia, No. 210 in Golfweek’s rankings, shaved 22 shots and climbed to the top of the leaderboard. The team finished at 50-over 890, three shots ahead of No. 141 Yale.

Penn was third at 58-over 898. Dartmouth came in fourth at 62-over 902 with Harvard another shot back at 903.

Columbia’s Clark Granum turned in a final-round 3-under 67 – which included two birdies in his final four holes – to climb from T-5 entering Round 3 to a tie for the lead with Penn’s Scotty Williams at 4-over 214. Williams defeated Granum on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Yale’s Tom McCarthy was third at 6-over 216, with Princeton’s Bernie D’Amato and Dartmouth’s Peter Williamson in a tie for fourth another shot back.

Columbia earned the Ivy League’s automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA regionals, which will be played May 20-22.
