Kent State win 12th straight MAC title
Kent State made it an even dozen Sunday in Fishers, Ind.
The Golden Flashes, No. 35 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, won their 12th straight Mid-American Conference title, closing with 12-over 300 at Hawthorns Golf and Country Club to cruise to a 19-shot victory. Kent State finished at 28-over 892.
No. 96 Ball State (306) was second at 911, and No. 112 Toledo (302) was third at 912.
During its run of 12 consecutive conference crowns, Kent State has been atop the leaderboard for 37 of 39 rounds and has had the individual champion 11 of 12 times.
Golden Flashes junior Martina Gavier contributed to that streak, winning the individual title for her first college victory. She shot rounds of 72-73-73 for a 2-over 218 total, three shots ahead of Ball State’s Brittany Kelly (71).
Kent State sophomore Shamira Marshall (72) was fourth, while sophomores Mercedes Germino (77) and Madi Morrow (78) tied for sixth.
“I’m so proud of the consistency of our program, and that’s thanks to our great student-athletes who are extremely tough competitors,” Kent State head coach Mike Morrow said. “Martina was in control of herself and her game all weekend long, and it was great to see her get her first collegiate win. This was a solid team effort from beginning to end, and we look forward to having a great regional.”
Kent State will learn its NCAA regional destination site April 26. Regionals will be played May 6-8.
