Rookie diary: Memories of Lorena

April 26, 2010
Since I last wrote, I spent a week at home and played a Duramed Futures Tour event in Brownsville, Texas. My time at home was great, as always. I got to catch up with friends and family while I was there. I also went to my podiatrist and got the cortisone injection that I mentioned in my last blog.
It was painful when I got it, but my foot feels much better and I am confident that it won’t give me any more problems. I am really happy I went ahead and took care of it!
Unfortunately, my time in Brownsville wasn’t as successful. I played pretty poorly and shot 79-76 to miss the cut. From the beginning it just kind of felt like my game was off. I missed way too many greens and didn’t get up-and-down enough, but I am just chalking it up to yet another learning experience.
Blackwelder’s Rookie Diary
Ever wonder what life is like for a LPGA rookie? Well, Mallory Blackwelder is here to tell you. Blackwelder, 22, will file a weekly diary on Golfweek.com to give you an insider’s view of life on the LPGA, LET and Duramed Futures Tour. Follow her on Twitter at twitter.com/MalBlackwelder.
That was actually the first cut I’ve missed since turning pro, so I knew it was bound to happen eventually. However, with Lorena Ochoa’s retirement announcement, some of her stats were published, and I saw that she made 101 consecutive cuts in a row. Her last missed cut dates back to 2005!
That’s pretty astounding. She has been a great ambassador for the game and the LPGA, and I know everyone will greatly miss her. I had the opportunity to meet her when I played in the 2008 Kraft Nabisco as an amateur. She was such a pleasant person. On one of the practice days, I found myself hitting balls between her and Annika, and I thought I was going to whiff the ball I was so nervous!
I am in Houston right now for a pro-am benefiting the Boys and Girls Club. I am really excited to be a part of it and really happy to be helping such a great cause. I got a little taste of life on the tour tonight when I went to dinner with some of the other girls here, including Solheim Cup members Angela Stanford and Brittany Lincicome. I had a lot of fun and I am really looking forward to my opportunity to play in some LPGA events this season and mix it up with them (if I get in some events)!
After the pro-am I will head to San Antonio for another Futures Tour event that starts Friday. I am really excited because my mom, Myra, is going to be coming to San Antonio. It will be the first time she’s been able to see me play all season! The last event she came to was the LPGA Q-School.
Hopefully I’ll have better news to report next week. Everyone have a great week!
