Murray State races to OVC crown
Wednesday, April 28, 2010
The Murray State Racers are properly nicknamed, aren’t they?
Well, at least for this week.
The Racers, No. 127 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, zipped by everyone else at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship on Wednesday, winning by 18 shots at GreyStone GC in Dickson, Tenn.
It was their first league title since 1991.
“I am very pleased with this group of ours, because they were focused from the start and were not going to let up until we had the OVC championship,” Murray State coach Eddie Hunt said of his first OVC title in nine seasons as coach at his alma mater.
“We played a tough schedule this year, and it showed in this event because we were battle-tested.”
Murray State shot a final-round 4-under 284 for a 1-over 865 total. Morehead State finished second at 883, and Jacksonville State was third at 886.
Senior Nick Newcomb closed with a 1-over 73 for a 1-under 215 total to win his second OVC individual title in three years. Senior teammate Jared Wolfe (71) birdied the final hole to finish second, one shot back. Senior Chris Griffin (71) tied for third with 2009 OVC champion Erik Barnes (72) of Austin Peay at 217.
“Nick has played great all season,” Hunt said. “Our team all knows when we tee it up we can count on a score from him. He's been the rock that has held us together.”
