South Alabama came back to upset Middle Tennesse State and win the Sun Belt Conference Championship Wednesday.

Trailing by four shots at the start of the final round, the Jaguars, No. 87 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, rallied to win by six shots, even with two double-bogeys and a bogey on the 18th hole at Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals’ Fighting Joe course in Muscle Shoals, Ala.

South Alabama shot a final-round 282 – its best round of the tournaments and 10 shots better than MTSU’s closing 292 – to finish at 8-over 872 for the three rounds.

Defending SBC champs and 38th-ranked Middle Tennessee finished at 14-over 878 and New Orleans ended up third, another shot back.

It was South Alabama’s first SBC title since 2005.

Marc-Etienne Bussieres led the Jaguars with final-round 3-under 70 for a 3-under 216 total, eight shots behind individual champion Oscar Zetterwall of New Orleans.
