For de Jonge, Players berth rides on Charlotte

Brendon de Jonge will have a vested interested in the outcome of this week’s Quail Hollow Championship.

A victory Sunday in Charlotte is the final way to qualify for next week’s Players Championship. If the Quail Hollow Championship winner is already exempt into the Players, then de Jonge will get the 145th and final spot in the field.

Of course, de Jonge could take care of business by winning the Quail Hollow Championship himself. He shot a first-round 70 and was in 15th place.

Sixteen players will be making their first Players start: Ricky Barnes, Kris Blanks, Rickie Fowler, Derek Lamely, Marc Leishman, Bill Lunde, Bryce Molder, Alex Prugh, Francesco Molinari, James Nitties, D.A. Points, Alvaro Quiros, Chris Stroud, Roland Thatcher, Jimmy Walker and Oliver Wilson. De Jonge also is seeking his first Players start.

A total of 149 players qualified for this year’s Players, but the following chose not to participate: Edoardo Molinari, Miquel Angel Jimenez, Yuta Ikeda, Louis Oosthuizen, Ryo Ishikawa, Rich Beem, Soren Hansen, Tom Watson, Michael Campbell, Michael Sim and Retief Goosen.

They were replaced by the following players, who earned spots based on their standing on the FedEx Cup points list: Fowler, Prugh, J.P. Hayes, Chris Couch and Blanks.

Goosen’s absence due to injury means 29 of the top 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking will play at TPC Sawgrass.
