Junior diary: Time of my life at Canon Cup
Monday, August 2, 2010
So this past week I went to Canon Cup and I didn’t know what to expect going into the tournament because I had never been before. However, Canon Cup was extremely fun, and filled with so much adventure and competitiveness.
I flew out from Nashville on Saturday and arrived in Boston a little after midnight. When I arrived at baggage claim, two of my teammates had just arrived as well and AJGA staff member picked us up and took us to the hotel. I had a practice round Sunday morning with some of my teammates and we had a blast. Victoria Tanco, Ashlan Ramsey and Shannon Aubert made it a great afternoon. We had so much fun ,but also got to work on our games and figure out the course.
Emma Talley, 16, will file a diary each week this summer as she plays some of the premier junior events in the country.
Talley is a two-time Rolex Junior All-American and has six AJGA victories. She holds both the AJGA's 54-hole scoring record for girls (15-under 198) and the record for largest margin of victory (22 shots).
On Monday, each East player was paired with a West player, and some of the tournament sponsors for the Junior-Am. Preston Valder and I didn’t win, but we had a lot of fun and played pretty well. Tuesday officially started the Canon Cup with morning and afternoon matches. In the morning, Victoria Tanco – AKA “The Tank – and I played best ball and we won, 2 and 1. In the afternoon, I caddied for Karen Chung in mixed alternate shot. Her partner was Nick Reach and we had a lot of fun, except we lost on the last hole. After the first day of play, our East team was down by just one point.
Because of this, one of our captains, Kelly, bought us knee socks to wear the rest of the week and Patrick Rodgers let me shave his hair into a Mohawk. It was so much fun since I had never cut hair in my life. But let me just say I did a pretty good job. It looked amazing! The rest of the night consisted of a team meeting where we told stories about ourselves. We all knew what we had to do the second round of the tournament, which was to go “Pretty Boy Schwag” (team motto) on the West team.
The second day, I was paired again with “The Tank” in alternate shot. Unfortunately, we did not play very well and lost. But our team played well in the morning and we were in a good position for the afternoon. I was paired with one of my really good friends from Louisville, Justin Thomas, in mixed best ball. We were 3 up at one time, but we ended up losing when Emily Tubert made a 70-foot putt on the last hole to beat us, 1-up. At the end of the second day, the score was tied 15-15.
Going into the last day of the Canon Cup, we thought we had a really good chance to pull the East team to a victory. After all, the West had a five-year winning streak going. During the last day, it looked like the East had it going, but when it came down to the end we had a sad loss and the West won by one point. Even though we lost, it was a wonderful experience and I had a blast! I have never had that much fun at a golf tournament. I hope I make it next year.
Now for the social part. I have never seen so much singing and dancing in a van before. After the tournament, even though we lost, both teams had a lot of fun. We all hung out with each other and went to Red Robin. I have never seen so much food! We all ate like beasts. When we got back to the hotel we all hung out for the longest time and went out into the bay on a rock path. I actually fell through one of the holes and bruised myself up a little, but I am all good, don’t y’all worry!
When all the fun ended, I flew home for a night to wash clothes. We woke up the next morning and drove to Fort Wayne, Ind., for the Junior PGA Championship. This tournament is always fun and enjoyable.
Have wonderful week and I will let y’all know how my week goes! One last thing - I want to thank all my teammates captains at the Canon Cup
