After the worst performance of his pro career, Tiger Woods was back on the course Monday at Whistling Straits, site of this week’s PGA Championship.

Woods has won 14 majors, but none since the 2008 U.S. Open. When the PGA Championship last visited Whistling Straits, in ’04, Woods tied for 24th.

Still the No. 1 player in the world, if only in ranking, Woods tied for fourth at the Masters, his first event since returning from a self-imposed exile after admitting to serial infidelity. He also had a chance to win the U.S. Open, but closed with a 75 to finish T-4 at Pebble Beach. Woods never was in contention at the British Open at St. Andrews, shooting rounds of 67-73-73-72 to tie for 23rd.

But at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, Woods has never looked worse.

Never outside the top 5 at Firestone in 11 previous events, Woods shot 18-over par, the highest 72-hole score of his career, to finish T-78, 30 shots behind winner Hunter Mahan. It was the first time Woods shot over par in all four rounds at a tournament in seven years.

He is currently No. 10 in the Ryder Cup standings (the top 8 automatically earn a spot), and with two tournaments remaining before the FedEx Cup playoffs, he is not guaranteed of being in the top 125 to get into the opening event at The Barclays.
