CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The second round of match play was anything but kind to the trio of stroke-play medalists. Only Erynne Lee managed to advance Thursday to the Round of 16, and only after staging a mighty comeback midway through her front nine at the Charlotte Country Club.

Jaclyn Sweeney lost in the Round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur.

Lee, who needed 19 holes to beat Isabelle Lendl in the Round of 64, went 4 down to Moriya Jutanugarn in the first five holes, but managed to stop the bleeding when Jutanugarn put it in a bunker at No. 6. The early deficit was starting to get in Lee’s head until she had a conversation with her father and caddie Brian.

“My dad and I discussed there’s still a lot of golf left and anything can happen,” she said.

Jutanugarn dropped three bogeys in the next six holes, helping Lee get it back to all square by No. 11 and eventually end the match with a 1-up victory.

“She opened the door for me and I took advantage,” Lee said.

Rachel Rohanna, who roared out of the gate with a 7-under 65 in the first round of match play, and Jaclyn Sweeney weren’t nearly as lucky, as they both fell on hard times Thursday morning.

Rohanna, of Ohio State, led Vanderbilt’s Marina Alex for much of the front nine, but lost confidence as the day went on and struggled with her putter.

“I felt like each day, less and less putts were being made by myself,” she said.

Rohanna lost on the first extra hole after making bogey out of a fairway bunker, ending a week in which she discovered the true potential of her game.

“I’ve just been playing so well this week, this is a little bit disappointing, not to at least make it to the Round of 16,” Rohanna said.

Sweeney, who announced recently that she would turn pro after this event instead of returning to Arizona State, suffered the bigger loss as she went down at the hands of Purdue’s Junthima Gulyanamitta. Sweeney led briefly at the beginning of the match, but Gulyanamitta won Nos. 12-15 to cap the 5-and-3 win.
