Youth movement continues at PGA

Ryan Moore is one of the twentysomethings near the top of the leaderboard Thursday at the PGA Championship.

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Golf’s youth movement continued Thursday in the first round of the PGA Championship. That theme was the most striking element of opening day.

Players in their 20s have won 13 PGA Tour events this year. More of the same came in a wave during Round 1.

Ten of the top 18 players on the scoreboard are in their 20s.

Five of the top 11 are in their 20s.

13 of those lead 18 are younger than Tiger Woods.

That changing of the guard people have talked about actually might be happening. Woods’ decline has coincided with the elevation of youth.

I’m not getting too carried away with that storyline, because it’s just a first-day leaderboard, and an incomplete one at that because half the field didn’t finish due to a long fog delay.

  But youth was served.
