No St. Jude sponsor issues for Westwood

Don’t expect another sponsor clash to arise between World No. 1 Lee Westwood, the UPS poster boy, and the St. Jude Classic now that FedEx has returned as the tournament’s title sponsor.
“You’re the first one to ask me about that,” tournament director Phil Cannon said. “I’ve certainly been thinking about it. Let me put those concerns at ease. The No. 1 player in the world is certainly welcome at our event.”
In late April when Westwood was asked why he wouldn’t be playing the week before the U.S. Open, he tugged on the UPS logo on his shirt. Cannon fanned the flames when he noted, “Brown trucks aren’t welcome on site.”
Eventually tournament organizers backpedaled and extended Westwood an invite. All was forgiven by the time Westwood slipped into the winner’s seersucker jacket, a 46 Regular that covered the offending logo.
“It would be foolhardy to go through that again,” Cannon said. “We’ve already reached out to him and he intends to defend here. I don’t see how this announcement could possibly affect that.”
