Dramatic qualifier kicks off Riviera week
Tuesday, February 2, 2010
It had to go into an extra day, but the Monday qualifier for the Northern Trust Open has finally ended.
A four-for-two playoff couldn’t be completed Monday evening in Industry City, Calif., so into Tuesday morning they went. The extra work paid off for Brendan Pappas and Brett Lederer, both of whom advanced to the PGA Tour festivities at famed Riviera CC.
Falling short in the playoff were Wil Collins and Joshua Habig, but equally disheartened had to be Colt Knost. One of 11 players to shoot 69 and miss the playoff by one, Knost was 6 under through 12 holes, then bogeyed the par-4 17th and par-5 18th to miss out.
Craig Bowden shot 67 to take medalist honors and join Pappas and Lederer in the march into Riviera.
With a limited field (132 players), the Monday qualifier was held to just three spots.
Two players who didn’t need the Monday qualifier were Alex Prugh and Rickie Fowler.
Prugh got into the Riviera field via his top-10 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open last week. Fowler also would have advanced via his top-10 finish in San Diego, but he already had been given a sponsor exemption.
