WEEK 5, MATCH 1: Jeff Babineau ($1,291,954; 2-1-1) vs. Jim McCabe ($450,050; 2-2-0)

JEFF BABINEAU

Best bet: Phil Mickelson. Lefty has gone 2-1-1 at The Riv going back to 2007 and got his feet wet last week, returning to competition at Torrey Pines. No reason to think he and Jerry West won’t be standing together with a trophy come Sunday.

Northern Trust Open

Site: Pacific Palisades, Calif.

Course: Riviera Country Club (Par 71, 7,298 yards)

Purse: $6.4 million

Winner’s share: $1,134,000

Ace up my sleeve: K.J. Choi. Having plummeted to No. 153 in the Sagarin rankings, he clearly qualifies as a sleeper this week, but slowly he’s been showing some good signs. A tie for 15th last week in San Diego should give him a little confidence, and if he gets a few more putts to fall, he’ll be right back in the mix.

JIM McCABE

Best bet: Ernie Els. Few courses attract a leaderboard of premier veterans quite like Riviera, so giving the nod to the Big Easy seems logical. He won this tournament in 1999, finished third in 2007, and came close to winning the 1995 PGA Championship at Riviera. Two solid tournaments thus far in 2010, there’s a lot to like about Els’ play.

Ace up my sleeve: Adam Scott. When last we saw the quiet Aussie on U.S. soil he was falling off the scene quickly. But late in the year he seemed to find something and a trip back home resulted in a win and some solid play. Is he back? Who knows. Let’s take a chance at yes.

WEEK 5, MATCH 2: Lance Ringler ($1,179,233; 1-2-1) vs. Sean Martin ($1,799,633; 2-2-0)

LANCE RINGLER

Best bet: Robert Allenby. He has started the season with a pair of top-10 finishes. He was a runner-up at the Sony Open in Hawaii and then tied for ninth last week at Torrey Pines. His track record at Riviera is good – four career top 10s and a victory in 2001. Allenby started the year at No. 31 in the Performance Index and checks in this week at No. 24.

Ace up my sleeve: Charles Howell III. I have to pick Howell for the same reasons I am selecting Allenby. Howell has started the year very well with two top 10s in three starts. He is 8-for-8 in cuts made at Riviera and won in 2007. Howell started the year at No. 85 in the Performance Index and is up 20 spots to No. 65 this week.

SEAN MARTIN

Best bet: Robert Allenby. Hard to pick against Phil Mickelson here, who’s won the past two years and lost a playoff in 2007, but I’m going with Allenby, who’s started his season with consecutive top 10s and has a good history at Riviera. His last PGA Tour victory came here (2001), and he’s finished in the top 20 each of the past three years, including a tie for third in 2007.

Ace up my sleeve: K.J. Choi. Choi is coming off a tie for 15th at the Farmers Insurance Open, and has had success at Riviera. He’s tied for third and tied for seventh the past two years, and hasn’t finished outside the top 30 since 2004.
