Rookie diary: Gearing up for a big week

Feb. 8, 2010
My off week in the Los Angeles area was very productive. Travis Mathew hooked me up with some really sweet clothes for the next several months and Todd Anderson and I put in some quality work on my swing and putting. Plus, I learned some things about course management by watching a good buddy of mine, Charles Howell, play about 11 holes during the first round of the Northern Trust.
I want to congratulate all the Saints players and fans for winning the Super Bowl. My caddie, Brad Landry, is originally from Lafayette, La., and is a huge Saints fan. I was happy to see the Saints win! I watched the game at Brophy’s Tavern in Carmel-by-the-Sea with Chris DiMarco, Will MacKenzie , Ryan Rue, my girlfriend, Brittany Nelson, and her mother, Deb. The tavern was a great local spot and everybody in there was pulling for the Saints to win.
Horschel’s Rookie Diary
Ever wonder what life is like for a PGA Tour rookie? Well, Billy Horschel is here to tell you. Horschel, 23, will file a weekly diary on Golfweek.com to give you an insider’s view of the PGA Tour. Follow him on Twitter at twitter.com/BillyHo_Golf.
The Monterey Peninsula might be one of the most amazing places on earth. I arrived in Monterey on Friday afternoon after driving up from Los Angeles via the Pacific Coast Highway. The drive was unbelievable, and if you ever have the chance to take it, I would strongly recommend it.
I’m looking forward to getting the week started, especially because I’ll be playing three unbelievable courses: Pebble, Spyglass and Monterey Peninsula (Shore Course). My plans for the week include playing in a pro-am on Monday at Monterey supporting the Boys and Girls Club of Monterey County. Tuesday, I am playing with Garrett Wills, Lee Janzen and Matt Every, who has been a good friend of mine since my freshman year at Florida.
As for questions I am asked as a Tour pro, many have asked if I stay in the most expensive places every week. I just don’t roll like that, and feel that I must be prudent in my spending right now. This week, I am staying at the Hilton Garden Inn in Monterey. I am a Hilton Honors member and I love Hilton hotels – their beds are amazing! One thing that I believe fans would be surprised to hear is that a good portion of Tour pros find their hotels on Priceline (getting the best prices is another way we can compete). When it all comes down to it, Tour pros like to save money just like everybody else.
Hope everybody has a great week, and I am looking forward to a great week myself. I have some special things planned. Talk to everyone soon.
