Johnson off to rocky start at Match Play

MARANA, Ariz. – Dustin Johnson has had two good weeks on the PGA Tour, but that looks to be coming to an end as he has conceded the first four holes to Camilo Villegas on Wednesday at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

It wasn’t even close.

No. 1, par 4, 469 yards: After a 322-yard drive, Johnson flew the green and was in the desert. He advanced his third shot 21 feet and with Villegas on the green in two, decided to move to the second hole. 1 down.

No. 2, par 5, 575 yards: Villegas hit his second shot to less than a foot and Johnson took four to get on the green. 2 down.

No. 3, par 3, 228 yards: Villegas stiffed it again to less than a foot. Johnson took two tries to get out of the greenside bunker and eventually decided to pick up. 3 down.

No. 4, par 4, 393 yards: Neither player got to the green, but Villegas was on green grass, just short of the putting surface. Johnson was so far left in the desert that Shotlink does not show the ball landed. Like in the movie “The Natural,” the ball never comes down. 4 down.

While writing this I’m happy to report that Johnson, clearly with no expectations at this point pared the fifth and sixth hole and actually made up some ground, he is only 3 down through six holes.

Funny enough if Villegas does win it wouldn’t be an upset. He is the higher seed.

This just in: No. 2 seed Henrik Stenson conceded his match to Ben Crane, a No. 15 seed, on the first tee because of flu symptoms.
