Nationwide Tour to stage Chiquita Classic
In the undercard to Tiger Woods’ public appearance, the Nationwide Tour is scheduled to have a news conference of its own Friday morning.
The tour will announce the creation of the Chiquita Classic, which will be held July 15-18 at TPC River’s Bend in the Cincinnati suburb of Maineville, Ohio. Chiquita Brands International is headquartered in Cincinnati.
The announcement originally was scheduled for 10:45 a.m. EST at TPC River’s Bend but has been moved up to 10. Woods’ appearance is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., with Golf Channel’s broadcast beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Chiquita has a growing relationship with the tour. One of Chiquita’s brands, Fresh Express, was announced Wednesday as title sponsor of the tour’s San Francisco-area stop. The Fresh Express Classic will be held April 15-18 at TPC Stonebrae in Hayward, Calif.
Fresh Express and Chiquita Fresh North America are subsidiaries of Chiquita Brands International. Fresh Express produces ready-to-eat spinach, salads, vegetables and fruits.
The Nationwide Tour also plans to add an event in Kansas City to the 2010 schedule.
The Christmas In October Classic did not return to the schedule after last year’s inaugural tournament when the Nationwide Tour terminated the three-year contract, according to a tournament official. However, the Nationwide Tour intends to return to the Kansas City area this year, likely with a new host organization, a Tour source told Golfweek.
