Fantasy Aces: Phoenix Open

(From left to right) Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler and Martin Kaymer.

WEEK 8, MATCH 1: Jim McCabe ($737,250; 3-4-0) vs. Sean Martin ($3,208,5133; 4-2-1)

JIM MCCABE

Best bet: Phil Mickelson. No, he hasn’t shown much form yet this year, but with the lefthander, you know it’s never far away. Safe pick.

Waste Management Phoenix Open

Site: Scottsdale, Ariz.

Courses: TPC Scottsdale (7,216 yards, par 71)

Purse: $6 million

Winner’s share: $1.08 million

Ace up my sleeve: J.B. Holmes. Let’s see, in four appearances at this desert party he’s gone win-MC-win-MC. Sounds like it’s his year to win. Plus, he’s been playing well.

SEAN MARTIN

Best bet: Martin Kaymer. I’m going to go out on a little bit of a limb here and pick Kaymer. Yes, he’s a top-10 player in the world, but his results in the States are spotty. Kaymer has had plenty of success in the desert, as in the Middle East (two wins in Abu Dhabi, T-4 at Dubai this year), but he also has a home in the Scottsdale, so will have the advantage of sleeping at home this week.

Ace up my sleeve: Rickie Fowler. Fowler made the cut at TPC Scottsdale last year as an amateur (thanks to a second-round 66), and is starting to play well after missing his first two cuts of the year. His best finish of the year, a tie for fifth in San Diego, came at a course he is familiar with, having played Torrey Pines in the 2008 U.S. Open. Last year, he lost a playoff at the Frys.com Open at Grayhawk, a place he’d played in the AJGA’s Thunderbird International Junior. I think his history at TPC Scottsdale will help him this week.

WEEK 8, MATCH 2: Lance Ringler ($1,486,658; 2-4-1) vs. Jeff Babineau ($1,344,418; 3-2-2)

LANCE RINGLER

Best bet: Camilo Villegas. Loaded field this week and plenty of marquee players to choose from. Quieltly, Villegas has been playing well, finishing in the top 20 in all three starts this year including a good run to the semifinals last week at the Match Play Champiuonship.

Ace up my sleeve: Jason Day. With 26 players ranked inside the top 50 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, it’s highly unlikely a player outside the top 50 will win this week. Let’s keep it as close to the top as we can with Jason Day at No. 52.

JEFF BABINEAU

Best bet: Phil Mickelson. OK, if you squint your eyes and look way down that road ahead, you can almost see Augusta National in the distance. It’s going to be upon us soon, and Lefty needs a ‘W’ before he gets there to alleviate any pressure as the heavy favorite (sans You Know Who, of course). In Arizona this week, the former ASU Sun Devil will give it the old college try.

Ace up my sleeve: J.B. Holmes. So he’s No. 145 in the Sagarins, true but the long-hitting Holmes has been playing great this season (two top 3s and more than $953K in three starts) and TPC Scottsdale was built for him. File this one in the Horses For Courses folder.
