Golfweek.com’s tribute to Payne Stewart on the 10th anniversary of his death last year was recognized as the outstanding Internet special project in the Golf Writers Association of America’s annual writing contest.

In the project, Golfweek writers shared some of their favorite memories of Stewart, whose 11 PGA Tour titles included two U.S. Opens and a PGA. He died with five others in a plane crash Oct. 25, 1999, one month after his American team won the Ryder Cup.

James Achenbach, Jeff Babineau, Ron Balicki, Bradley S. Klein, Jim McCabe, Dan Mirocha, Adam Schupak, Rich Skyzinski and Alistair Tait were involved in the project.

Golfweek’s other award winners:

Babineau, with two runners-up for Internet columns and non-daily columns;

Jeff Rude, with a third place and an honorable mention in non-daily news

Beth Ann Baldry and Gene Yasuda, with an honorable mention in non-daily news;

McCabe, with an honorable mention in non-daily news.
