Jones displays ‘essence of the Solheim’
SINGAPORE – Mike Whan gathered together the 2009 U.S. Solheim Cup team – dressed to the nines at the iconic Raffles Hotel – during the pro-am party Wednesday evening to share the news of Rosie Jones’ captaincy.
Solheim veteran Juli Inkster thinks Jones is the perfect fit for 2011.
“As far as the spirit and essence of the Solheim, Rosie is probably one of the top two or three,” Inkster said.
“Rosie does everything with a lot of emotion, and that’s kind of what the Solheim is.”
Angela Stanford, like many LPGA players, thought Meg Mallon might follow Beth Daniel next year for the matches at Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland. Mallon served as assistant captain in ’09 and is of Irish descent. Inkster, however, said her good friend wanted to concentrate on her own game the next two years.
“The last couple years have been really hard on her with the family, losing her sister,” Inkster said. “She couldn’t really devote a lot of time to golf.”
Inkster stated last September that 2009 would be her last Solheim Cup as a player. She’s interested in being an assistant captain, should Jones give her the nod.
“Even if it’s not assistant, I’d just like to help her to see how the whole thing works,” Inkster said. “I’ll be there either way, watching or helping.”
