Champions Skins Game lives on, but in tape delay
The Skins Game unceremoniously went on hiatus last year after it failed to land a new title sponsor. Thanksgiving leftovers just weren’t the same without it. At least the Champions Skins Game lives on (thanks Wendy’s) this weekend at Royal Kaanapali in Maui. Here are my three thoughts on the Skins:
- It is so fitting that Fred Couples is making his Champions Tour debut in this event. Couples, the King of Skins, won the Tour’s version of the Skins seven times. Expect him to enjoy yucking it up with his partner, Price, in this low-key affair.
- No offense to “the Boss of the Moss,” but what’s Loren Roberts doing in this field? You have five Hall of Famers – Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Gary Player, Nick Price and Ben Crenshaw – major winners Couples and Fuzzy Zoeller (who are on the Hall ballot) and then Roberts. He won eight times on Tour and is cleaning up as a senior, but I’m betting he’s pinching himself and hoping his chariot doesn’t turn into a pumpkin before the ball is over.
- I was all excited to DVR the broadcast, make some dip and watch Nicklaus team with Watson. You could put that on Pay-Per-View and I would pony up. But then holy guacamole, I noticed the TV times are scheduled for Feb. 27-28. C’mon ESPN, tape delay? I know the NFL playoffs are going on, but a month wait? Really? That’s too long to delay the tape in this era of instant gratification.
