WEEK 3, MATCH 1: Jim McCabe ($287,350; 2-0-0) vs. Sean Martin ($1,725,433; 1-1-0)

JIM MCCABE

Best bet: Chad Campbell. Low-ball hitter who might not be helped by the soggy conditions, but we’ll still give him the nod. If not for a third-round 73 he might have won the Sony. He played well at the Hope a year ago.

Bob Hope Classic

Site: La Quinta, Calif.

Course: PGA West, Arnold Palmer Private Course (6,930 yards, par 72); PGA West, Jack Nicklaus Private Course (6,951 yards, par 72); La Quinta Country Club (7,060 yards, par 72); SilverRock Resort (7,578 yards, par 72)

Purse: $5 million

Winner’s share: $900,000

Ace up my sleeve: John Merrick. Nearly won here a year ago and is coming off of a respectable T-25 at the Sony. Given that he also played well late in the year in China, opposite Nick Watney in the World Cup, he’s one of the few guys who isn’t shaking off the off-season rust.

• • •

SEAN MARTIN

Best bet: Michael Sim. Last year, Sim led Nationwide Tour in scoring average and was third in birdies per round. Sim is used to winning birdiefests - his three Nationwide Tour victories last year came with winning totals of 18 under, 22 under and 20 under.

Ace up my sleeve: Jason Dufner. Dufner quietly made last year’s Tour Championship, and got off to a good start this year, finishing T-20 at the Sony Open. He tied for 34th at last year’s Hope. Also look out for John Merrick, who has finished T-2 and T-16 in the past two Hopes.

WEEK 3, MATCH 2: Lance Ringler ($604,500; 0-2-0) vs. Jeff Babineau ($778,100; 1-1-0)

LANCE RINGLER

Best bet: Tim Clark. For a couple of reasons: He has a pair of top 10s in three starts at the Bob Hope, he finished well last week in Hawaii and he is the top-ranked player in this week’s field according to the Performance Index.

Ace up my sleeve: Chad Campbell. Most people won’t view Campbell as a sleeper, but since he is outside the top 50 he qualifies here. His record at the Bob Hope is good - making the cut in six of seven career starts with two top 10s.

• • •

JEFF BABINEAU

Best bet: Matt Kuchar. He’s been playing well since the playoffs last fall (winning at Turning Stone, finishing third at SBS to open 2010) and has the placid demeanor to handle a long, long week (five rounds and a pro-am format).

Ace up my sleeve: Chad Campbell. Former Hope champion got off a decent start at Sony (T-8), and if the wind starts blowing, he has the game to handle it.
