PGA professionals and fitters know the importance of using the right grip. First, a golfer should find a suitable texture and firmness. Second, there is the issue of size. Grips are made in different thicknesses, and standard grips can be enlarged with build-up tape underneath.

Regardless of the style, all grips should be changed at least once per year. Many clubmakers recommend changing grips every six months.

Winn: WinnLite

The skinny: Available in WinnLiteFirm, WinnLiteMedium and WinnLiteSoft, these grips weigh only 25 grams, half the weight of standard grips. This will result in more head feel and a higher swingweight. Winn also offers an oversized Lite putter grip, the WinnJumboLite (62 grams).

Cost: $8.50

Availability: Jan. 15

Lamkin: Performance Plus 3Gen

The skinny: 3Gen is Lamkin’s newest material, and the company says it will stand up to deterioration from ozone and UV rays better than other synthetic rubber grips. Initially available only in white (colors to follow), the grip features Lamkin’s Performance Plus shape that is thicker in the lower portion to neutralize a dominant hand.

Cost: $4.99

Availability: Jan. 15

Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G grip

The skinny: After 20 years, Golf Pride’s popular Tour Wrap is getting a facelift. The changes, though, are more than skin deep – softer material, enhanced tackiness, two new colors (white and red) and a new Jumbo Tour Wrap with a straighter taper.

Cost: $3.50

Available: March 1
