Duquesne will drop men’s golf at the end of the spring season as part of a restructuring in its athletic department, the school announced this week.

Duquesne, a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, also will cut its baseball, men’s swimming and wrestling programs. The move will leave the school with 16 varsity sports – seven men’s and nine women’s – one more than the minimum for NCAA Division I membership.

The move will affect 70 student-athletes and five coaches. The students will retain their scholarships through their eligibility; the coaches, including sixth-year men’s golf coach Tom Farrell, will be paid through June.

The $1 million-plus in annual savings from the cuts will be reallocated to Duquesne’s other sports, athletic director Greg Amodio said.

“This action is in no way meant to diminish the dedication, effort or ability of these fine student-athletes, coaches and alumni,’’ Amodio said in a statement released through the university. “They have contributed greatly to Duquesne athletics and to the vitality and history of the university.’’

Duquesne’s men’s team played in five fall tournaments, with a season-best fifth-place finish in the 10-team Robert Morris Invitational. Among the Dukes’ eight golfers, only Mike Hartman is a senior. No. 1 player Ben Wolfe is a junior.

Duquesne said that it would assist any athlete wishing to transfer.

Amodio oversees a department of 475 student-athletes and a $10.8 million budget. Duquesne does not field a women’s golf team.

“The fiscal challenges facing collegiate athletic departments across the country require making difficult decisions to ensure viability,’’ he said.
