PEREIRA, Colombia – Colombia’s Oscar Alvarez came from behind Monday to win the VI Abierto Internacional de Golf Eje Cafetero, exactly one year to the day he claimed his last Tour de las Americas title at the same venue – Club Campestre de Pereira.
Trailing overnight leader Angel Romero by two and in a tie for second at the start of the day, Alvarez posted a 4-under 67. Four birdies on the front nine, a bogey on the par-5 12th and a birdie on 16 secured his one-stroke victory over countryman Alvaro Arizabaleta.
Arizabaleta, playing in the group ahead of Alvarez, also posted a final-round 67.

Alvarez, who won last year’s Abierto Internacional Ciudad de Bucaramanga, joins fellow countrymen Jesus Amaya, Romero and Eduardo Herrera as the only Colombian players to win at least two TLA titles. The 27-year old champion closed the week at 13-under 271 and earned US $8,050.
Romero, 44, enjoyed a bogey-free 65 on Sunday to take control of the US $35,000 tournament but shot 71 Monday to finish third.
Amateur Esteban Restrepo was a model of consistency, shooting rounds of 69-69-68-68 to join Jose Manuel Garrido (69) in a tie for fourth.
The event marked the beginning of the TLA’s month-long visit to Colombia. The US $50,000 Abierto Internacional de Golf Copa Sura is July 15-18 in Medellin, and the US $160,000 63rd Colombia Open is July 29-Aug. 1 in Bogota.
