Kevin Chappell took an early two-shot lead Thursday at the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic, shooting an 11-under 61 at the Raven Golf Club at Lora Bay in Clarksburg, Ontario.

Chappell, a member of the national championship UCLA team in 2008 who also won the individual title that year, had 11 birdies and no bogeys in his opening round. He birdied every hole but the par-3 15th on his way to a back-nine 28.

Chappell won the Fresh Express Classic at TPC Stonebrae earlier this year, and is No. 3 on the Nationwide Tour money list.

Zack Miller, who played the first round at the Georgian Bay Club, and James Hahn were T-2 at 9 under. Justin Hicks and Adam Hadwin, both playing at the Raven Golf Club, were another shot back.
