The Handa Australian Senior Open, Australia’s top senior tournament, joins the European Senior Tour this year as a co-sanctioned event.
The joint event will see a purse increase of $100,000 and will invite the top 30 senior tour players.
The event at Royal Perth Golf Club, to be held Nov. 19-21, is the opening tournament on the 2011 European Senior Tour schedule.
“I am so proud of the growth of the Handa Australian Senior Open over the past three years, and to now have the event feature in conjunction with the European Senior Tour is a big step forward for senior golf in Australia,” said sponsor Haruhisa Handa, chairman of the International Sports Promotion Society. ISPS also sponsors four other events on tour.
The tournament also is a significant occasion for Australian golf icon Ian Baker-Finch, who will make his senior debut on home soil. Baker-Finch, who will turn 50 on Oct. 24, is best known for his 1991 British Open victory. He will be joined in the field by defending champion Mike Harwood, Peter Senior, Wayne Grady and David Merriman.
