Tuesday, July 13, 2010
Denny McCarthy, ranked No. 3 in the 2011 class and No. 5 overall by Golfweek, has given a verbal commitment to play college golf at the University of Virginia.
McCarthy, of Burtonsville, Md., had made unofficial visits to Virginia, North Carolina and Wake Forest before deciding on Virginia. The senior-to-be at Georgetown Preparatory High School in North Bethesda, Md., had also seen much interest from Texas, Illinois and LSU.
McCarthy recently placed second at the AJGA Thunderbird Invitational with rounds of 71-69-67 for a 9-under 207 total. He also placed sixth at the AJGA FootJoy Invitational with rounds of 66-69-66-75 for a 4-under 276 total. Last spring he was named High School Golfer of the Year by The Washington Post. In June he won the Maryland State Junior Championship.
McCarthy said he chose Virginia “because it’s a golf program on the rise, its excellent facilities and outstanding academics.”
