Danielle Kang was one of just five players in red numbers Monday at the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship, opening with a 5-under 67 to take a three shot lead in the first round of stroke play.

Kang, who just finished her freshman year at Pepperdine, made just one bogey on the day – at the 372-yard par-4 14th – to accompany her six birdies. Kang was medalist of the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur and T-15 at last year’s NCAA Championship. She also made the cut at this year’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Coming in at 2 under were Summar Roachell, Ginger Howard and 12-year-old Megan Khang.

Victoria Tanco, who was pegged as one of the favorites coming into the tournament as Golfweek's top-ranked junior, finished at 8-over 80, which was tied for 76th.

The field of 156 players will be cut to 64 following Tuesday’s second round of stroke play.
