Marquette hired former Northwestern associate head coach Steve Bailey as its head men’s golf coach, the Milwaukee university announced Tuesday.

A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Bailey served as associate head coach of the Wildcats since 2008. He arrived at Northwestern as an assistant coach in 2005.

“I see a ton of potential at Marquette University, and my wife Bethany and I are excited to join the Blue and Gold family,” Bailey said. “We’re going to be successful, with a solid work ethic and strong team values. Our overall focus will be a commitment to excellence, with an emphasis on getting better every day.”

Bailey helped recruit South Korea native Eric Chun, who earned 2009 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year honors and was the first freshman since Steve Stricker (1986) to win the Big Ten individual championship. In June, the Wildcats made their second NCAA Championships appearance during Bailey’s tenure with the team.

Chun also qualified for and played in the 2010 British Open in St. Andrews, Scotland, where Bailey served as his caddie.

Bailey was responsible for the day-to-day operations as associate head coach for Northwestern, including recruiting, coordinating team practices and tournament scheduling. He also served as tournament director of the Big Ten Match Play Championship and the Windon Memorial Classic, and was a member of the Golf Coaches Association’s Board of Directors.

“I’m thankful to Northwestern University for giving me a chance, and I could not have asked for a better mentor in (coach) Pat Goss,” Bailey said. “Pat is a tremendous golf coach, but more importantly, he is a tremendous person and friend. Under Pat’s guidance, I have learned what it takes to build a successful program. Now I’m eager to take on that challenge at Marquette.”

Bailey graduated from Radford University in 1998 with a degree in communications.
