EmailSOUTHPORT, England – Vision54 guru Pia Nilsson was there to give Brittany Lincicome a high five when she walked out of the scoring trailer. Lincicome is quick to acknowledge her mental maturation, which was on fine display during the second round of the Ricoh Women’s British Open.
“This time last year I would’ve shot 100 today,” Lincicome said.
After three-putting the 11th for bogey at Royal Birkdale, Lincicome hit a near-shank on the 12th tee. Trying to hit an easy 6-iron, she found the tall weeds right of the green. That led to a double-bogey 5 and bad swing thoughts.
She then bogeyed the 13th, bringing her score back to even par. She had made the turn in 4 under.
“Felt like I was hitting it really well and one bad swing puts a bad kink in things,” said Lincicome, who fought hard to put a smile back on her face.
She birdied the 15th hole and came to the closing two par 5s with good energy. After nearly holing her second shot into the 17th, Lincicome made eagle. She then birdied the last to finish 4 under, four shots behind leader Yani Tseng.
The Florida native teed off at 7:14 a.m., finishing just before a Royal rain began to fall. Worried she might get a chill, Lincicome wore four layers of pants and three pairs of socks. She neglected to realize that leggings aren’t the easiest things to come off mid-round, however, and found herself sweating around the course rather than shedding layers. Still, she managed to finish comfortably tied for second at lunchtime.
“Being in the lead is hard to hold onto, so it’s nice to kind of be a couple back,” she said.
Lincicome, winner of the 2009 Kraft Nabisco, has five top 7s in 22 majors. Her best finish at the British Open is a tie for 11th in ’07.
