EmailSOUTHPORT, England – Yani Tseng looks at the vastly vacant trophy case in the office of her Lake Nona home and thinks about all the work that lies ahead of her. Of course, that case was designed and built by the home’s previous owner, Annika Sorenstam, so her sights are set rather high.
“That trophy case looks so empty to me,” Tseng said. “I really don’t like that feeling.”
Tseng has won three times in her short career, twice at majors. She has only competed in 11 majors as a professional, giving her a winning percentage of 18.18. The 21-year-old finished second at Sunningdale in 2008, and currently leads the Ricoh Women’s British Open by four strokes.
“I feel super; I feel confident,” Tseng said. “Just loving the links course.”
After being the only player in the field to hit all 18 greens on Thursday, Tseng hit 14 in Round 2. She carded five birdies and one bogey for her second consecutive 68.
Tseng approached Sorenstam, who now lives across the fairway in Nona, for advice about becoming world No. 1 earlier this year. Sorenstam encouraged the young, aggressive player to play smart and stay patient. She helped Tseng appreciate the importance of practice and told her she needed to trust herself.
Tseng bought a Porsche Cayenne to commemorate her first major victory in 2008. (Actually, it was supposed to be her prize for Rookie of the Year, but she couldn’t wait until year’s end.) Makes one wonder how she would celebrate becoming world No. 1.
