Toy Box notes: Johnson, SeeMore partnership

Crowne Plaza Invitational winner Zach Johnson has used a SeeMore putter since his days on the NGA/Hooters Tour in 2001. He won the first time he used an original SeeMore FGP putter. Then he won again. And again.

Three consecutive Hooters victories, and his career took off. Since then, Johnson has used a SeeMore FGP for each of his seven PGA Tour wins.

“Actually, he has used four different putters, but all of them are in the FGP family,” SeeMore managing partner Jim Grundberg said.

Even though SeeMore makes milled versions of the FGP, Johnson insists on using only the cast version (34 inches, 2.5 degree). These models retail for $150 to $185.

Johnson’s other tools of the trade: The rest of Johnson’s bag is all Titleist.

He carries a 909D2 driver (8.5 degree), 909F2 fairway woods (13.5 and 18.5 degree), 909H hybrid (21 degree), AP1 (4-iron), AP2 irons (5-9), Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges (48, 54, 60 degree) and a Pro V1x ball.

Johnson had a Diamana Blue Board 73X graphite shaft in his driver, making it the fourth PGA Tour victory of 2010 for Mitsubishi Rayon driver shafts.

Lehman relies on TaylorMade: Senior PGA Championship winner Tom Lehman carried mostly TaylorMade clubs, including some older models.

He had a TaylorMade R7 SuperQuad driver (9.5 degree), TaylorMade V-Steel 3-wood (13 degree), TaylorMade Rescue TP (19 degree), Cobra Forged (3-iron), TaylorMade rac (4-iron), TaylorMade Burner (5-8) and TaylorMade R9 (9-PW) irons, Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges (54 and 60 degree), a Scotty Cameron GSS putter and a Titleist Pro V1 ball.

More speed, distance for Overton: Jeff Overton recently switched to a TaylorMade SuperFast driver (9.5 degree) and tied for third at Colonial.

“I gained 4 1/2 mph on my ball speed (translating to about 15 yards in overall distance),” Overton said.

Overton ranked fourth for the week in driving distance, averaging 312 yards.

Short shots: Baseball slugger Adam Dunn of the Washington Nationals, playing in San Diego against the Padres this past weekend, received a full set of Callaway Diablo golf clubs at his locker. The clubs came from Callaway headquarters, located 30 miles away in Carlsbad, Calif., and were a reward for blasting a 471-foot home run on May 15. Callaway will give a set of Diablo clubs to any major leaguer hitting a home run longer than 470 feet. So far this season, only Dunn and Jason Heyward of the Atlanta Braves have accomplished the feat. . . . . Derek Lamely had Callaway build him a 1-iron, which appears to be the only 1-iron on the PGA Tour. Callaway technicians took an X-Prototype 2-iron and bent it to 15 degrees, creating a 1-iron. . . . . Fredrik Jacobson damaged his Callaway Vintage X-Forged 58-degree wedge (with 10 degrees of bounce and a C-grind sole) on a rock at the HP Byron Nelson Championship and needed to have a new one made for Colonial. . . . . Aldila dominated the wood shaft count and hybrid shaft count at Colonial. Boo Weekley had his best finish of the season ninth), with an Aldila Prototype shaft in his Cleveland Launcher DST driver. . . . Blake Adams and John Daly each added TaylorMade long irons for tee shots at Colonial – Adams an R9 3-iron and Daly a rac MB 2-iron. . . . Sure, Jason Day won the Byron Nelson title the week before Colonial, but that didn’t stop him from switching 3-woods. He went to a TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 3-wood, which was bent from 15 degrees down to 13.5. . . . Six white Rossa Ghost putters were in play at Colonial, used by Justin Rose, Blake Adams, John Daly, Tim Herron, Andres Romero and Martin Laird.
