Junior diary: Indy 500 and Open qualifier
Thursday, June 3, 2010
Hope everyone had a good week and a great Memorial Day weekend. I had a great week! With finishing up school, taking my finals, playing a few high school events, practicing all day and going to the Indy 500, my week was very eventful.
Living in Indianapolis, the Indy 500 is a huge deal. Named the greatest spectacle in racing, it is one of the best sporting events in the world, I believe. With all of the tradition, the month of May is really an exciting time to be in Indianapolis. This year’s race didn’t disappoint. Even though it was 96 degrees, it was an exciting finish and an eventful race throughout. No matter if you are a race fan or not, I encourage everyone to come to Indy and experience the race at least once.
Patrick Rodgers, 17, will file a diary each week this summer as he plays some of the premier junior events in the country.
Rodgers, a second-team AJGA All-American, is No. 7 in the Golfweek Junior Rankings.
Finishing up school was tough this week. We had two days of finals, and we had golf matches the night before both of them. I studied hard and hopefully my grades showed it, but I’m just glad that school is over and I’m ready for an exciting summer.
I got my first full day of practice all year on Friday, and I realized how much I love waking up early and getting to the golf course with the dew still on the ground. I stayed at my home club, Country Club of Indianapolis, all day. I got used to my new wedges and just focused on fine-tuning my game a little bit. I am starting to play well. My swing is starting to feel really sharp, my short game is improving, and I’m continuing to make a lot of putts. I just need to sharpen a few areas of my game to be ready for my U.S. Open qualifier next week at the Country Club of St. Albans. I feel like I have been improving a lot in the last few weeks, so if I can continue that trend, I think I will have some pretty good golf ahead of me.
Looking ahead, I have a free week of practice this week. I’m going to head over to St. Louis to take an early look at the golf course for next week. I’m going to try to get a good feel and confidence with the new wedges, and hopefully be playing well heading into next week, postseason high school golf and a busy summer schedule.
Hope everyone has a great week!
