Langley, Williams take top GCAA honors

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – Newly-crowned NCAA champion Scott Langley, a junior at Illinois, heads the 11-player list of 2009-10 Ping First-team All-Americans as Washington’s Chris Williams landed the Phil Mickelson Award as National Freshman of the Year. The awards were announced Friday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Langley finished the 54-hole stroke play portion of this year’s NCAA Championship at The Honors Course at 10-under-par 206 to gain medalist honors by two strokes over sophomores Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State and Alex Ching of San Diego.

Also named to the first team were John Chin, UC Irvine; Nils Floren, Texas Tech; Dustin Garza, Wichita State; Russell Henley, Georgia; Andrea Pavan, Texas A&M; Jonathan Randolph, Mississippi; Nick Taylor, Washington; Peter Uihlein, Oklahoma State; Diego Velasquez, Oregon State; and Eugene Wong, Oregon.

The second, third and honorable mention All-Americans are expected to be announced next week.

As the most outstanding freshman in Division I, Williams twice tied for medalist honors this season, at the Battle at the Beach and the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational.

He also was runner-up at both the NCAA West Regional and the Washington National Individual Championship while collecting top-10 finishes at the Pac-10 Championship (T-8) and Palouse Collegiate (seventh).

Rounding out the All-freshman team were Cody Gribble, Texas; Cameron Peck, Texas A&M; T.J. Vogel, Southern California; and Pontus Widegren, UCLA.
