Florida State freshman Michael Hebert, who earlier this month helped lead the Seminoles to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championship, will not return to school in the fall. He informed Florida State coach Trey Jones of his decision to transfer upon returning from NCAAs.

Hebert, who tied for 18th individually at The Honors Course, said the decision was made because of “personal reasons,” while declining to discuss the specifics of his sudden departure. Hebert, of Orlando, Fla., posted five top-20 finishes this season, including a T-11 at the NCAA Central Regional, in which he shot a final-round 64 to propel Florida State to a second-place finish. He was No. 258 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

“I gave it a full year, gave it my best and I felt like I helped the team,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for Florida State, and they’re running a great program. It’s just for personal reasons.”

Hebert has not decided where he will attempt to transfer, but hopes to identify a school by the end of the month. “I don’t want to go too far from home,” he said. “That’s all I know.”

Florida State, which finished the season No. 16 in Golfweek’s rankings, lost to eventual champion Augusta State in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship on June 6. The only freshman to compete in the match-play portion, Hebert finished 1-1.

“Everything was a surprise to me and the team,” Jones said, “but we definitely don’t want to keep him from doing what he wants to do. Whatever he does, we wish him nothing but the very best.”
