University of Georgia rising senior Russell Henley is the recipient of the 2010 Haskins Award, which for 39 years has honored the nation’s most outstanding collegiate golfer.

The announcement came Thursday during the annual Southeastern Amateur Golf Tournament at the Country Club of Columbus in Georgia after a nationwide vote of college golfers, coaches and media.

Henley is the first Georgia golfer to receive the Haskins Award, and only the second from the Southeastern Conference. Henley finished the season as the top-ranked player in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings and was named Golfweek’s Player of the Year. Henley, who won four times during his junior season, recently won the SEC Championship and the NCAA Central Regional before finishing in a tie for 18th place at the NCAA Championship.

Henley, of Macon, Ga., is third in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He qualified to play in the U.S. Open at Peeble Beach.

Henley will play for Team USA in the Palmer Cup in Northern Ireland this summer.
